and try to fill that hole. >>> right now we have breaking news out of israel where a man armed with a knife and an ax attacks a security guard at the u.s. embassy in tel aviv this morning. the guard was slightly hurt in the leg but was able to fire a warning shot into the air and they were able to catch that suspect. police say the attacker is an israeli citizen in his 40s. the man's motive at this hour unclear, but investigators say the incident may not have anything to do with israel's conflict with hamas militants. now, security there has been increased at that embassy following this strange and sudden attack. >>> the stabbing comes as violence continues to develop in the middle east. this morning more than 100 palestinians are dead as israel continues its air strikes in gaza. half of the palestinians killed are civilians. israel has attacked more than 1300 targets since the attacks began november 14th. but palestinian militants are firing back. this morning at least one rocket fired from gaza landed in a town in southern israel causing damage to cars and a bus. israel is st

are continuing tod today. they also are continue to attack rocket stockpiles from gaza. israel's goal, of course, is to stop, to prevent hamas from attacking israeli citizens with its rockets. there have been about 850 attacks this year, 100 in the last week alone, so that's what israel wants stop. at the same time, hamas has been retaliating today. at least 130 rockets fired from gaza into israeli cities. about 50 of those rockets were intercepted by israel's homemade antimissile defense system, the iron dome, but one did get through. it hit the israeli town and killed three israeli citizens, and now israel is using that, of course, to threaten more attacks. the southern commander of the israeli army said that the assassination yesterday of ahmed jabbaarie, which kicked all this off, the militant leader, he says is just the beginning. meanwhile, israeli troops are gathering on the edge of gaza. tanks have been reported moving south. a ground invasion is possible. it's definitely not what israel wants, but israel's defense minister ehud barak said this morning that israel would do anything, and

as israel and palestinian militants get closer to the brink this weekend. israel expanding its air assault against hamas and palestinian militants continuing to fire rockets into civilian areas of southern israel. that's where i want to begin this morning. i've got nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell and "new york times" columnist tom friedman. who better to have to discuss this. tom, as the two sides get closer to the brink, based on your experience and reporting, where is this going? >> let's just go around the horn, david, quickly. i think hamas is trying to use this moment to both break out of the blockade and try to end targeted killing of its leaders from israel, and trying to take advantage of the new arab spring balance of power, the muslim brotherhood in egypt, to leverage that possibility. israel. israel has been watching for the last six to nine months hamas bringing in longer and longer range missiles from iran. i think they saw this as an opportunity of necessity to take those out, missiles that can now hit tel aviv and jerusalem. egypt. this is a real pr
